I write this having just been to a wonderful organ recital given by our Director of Music, Peter Crompton. It was a rich programme of music played on our magnificent Chapel organ - reckoned to be one of the finest instruments in the world (Carlo Curley says it’s in the top 5!). Peter’s priority this term is to get our Chapel Choir, which numbers in excess of 130 pupils, ready for the end of term concert in The Royal Albert Hall in the company of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of John Rutter; I’m sure he’s up to the challenge!

On Saturday, two sporting events caught the eye; The Great East Swim took place on Alton Water, our Band under the direction of the evergreen Roger Jones played some rousing music to warm up the competitors and spectators. Lee Menday and others from the RHSA community ploughed their way round the 1 mile course. James Rae (Lower Sixth/Hawke), our only pupil competitor completed the course in 25 minutes 22 seconds to finish 65th amongst the non-elite men, in a total field of 1,500 competitors - a fine achievement. Next year no doubt, a larger number of pupils will participate.

On Saturday afternoon our 11-year old pupils competed in the annual Year 7 cross-country race. Sarah Murrison won the girls’ race comfortably and Will Matthews won the boys’ race having resisted the determined challenge of Robert Cowper-Coles, the second runner home.

Much of my time during the past week has been taken up with Health and Safety related issues. We are currently reviewing all of our H&S policies and procedures with the help of an external consultant - an essential exercise which will be completed by the end of term. I hasten to add that the state of play is already good but it is always wise to take a fresh look at such matters from time to time.

The quiet weekend has been a welcome respite for us all after a very hectic first three weeks of term. I am delighted to report that the school remains in good form, and the sun continues to shine!
