From the outside the bewildering array of identical Houses can often give the impression of a uniformity of approach which belies the fact that each House is as individual as the pupils it contains. Anson is no different in this respect and draws heavily on its long traditions and association with Lord Anson himself. Whilst many would consider his circum-navigation of the globe in 1739 to be somewhat of a failure having set out with seven ships of the line and returning with just one, we beg to differ! Custome House

Lord Anson’s coat of arms bears the inscription ‘Nil desperandum’ and it carries great weight in the running of the house today. Roughly translated it means ‘never despair’ or ‘never give up’ and that spirit is ingrained in the fabric of the House. If one is to investigate Lord Anson’s activities a little further we would find that he took many vessels as prizes along his route and returned with today’s equivalent of around £40 million in gold ‘relieved’ from his conquests. So with perseverance comes its reward; a fine and honourable tradition to pursue.

To be a part of Anson house is to share in this indefatigable spirit and to face all the school has to offer knowing the support of both the staff and boys in the house. To share in the many events held as a house is a unique opportunity. The House Christmas dinner, for example, gives a rare insight into the way in which all pull together to mark the passing of another year and acknowledge our achievements. The Inter-House swimming competition is another event in which all of the boys rally to give their best. Underpinning all of this is the desire never to give in or give up!Anson

As the House master of this fine house, I am in the enviable position of being able to share in the development which takes place over the time they are with us; to welcome the small boy and say goodbye to the young man some years later. To be a part of the best times in their lives and to pick up the pieces when the boys are at their lowest. This is, of course, not possible without the support of an excellent matron and a fully committed team of House tutors. Each in their turn bring a distinct dimension to the House but all work together to create an environment where each boy can fulfil their potential.

So all that remains is for me to welcome you to this House and discover the unique spirit Anson has to offer.
